The origin of Valentine’s Day is a celebration of the Saint Valentinus. He is recognized due to his sacrifices.  He was a priest in the third century in Rome. During this time Emperor Claudius III thought that single men made better soldiers so he banned marriage. Valentinus decided to go against this and help marry men and women in secret. After he got caught he was put to  death. That is why we celebrate him. He’s like a symbol of love. The reason why the holiday is celebrated in February is because people believed, in France and England, on February 14 was when birds started to mate which is another symbol of love.

Jessica King (12): Lots of people think Valentine’s Day is just about couples in love. I love Valentine’s day. I do have a boyfriend and this will be our first Valentine’s Day together. It’s not all about having a boyfriend or girlfriend either. I just love it because I get to celebrate all the people I love especially my family. My favorite part about Valentine’s is all the love in the air. I think it’s great because it’s that one time of year where there is so much positivity.  I also love all of the pink and red that everyone wear. The best gift I have gotten from Valentine’s Day was a coffee mug with a stuffed animal inside from my dad. I spend every Valentine’s Day with my family but I’m also spending it with my boyfriend. The traditions that happen every year is my dad gets me and my mom chocolate and stuffed animals. Valentine’s Day is a great day to spread the love.

Elizabeth Hunter (12): Valentine’s Day is always something I’ve enjoyed. It’s a wonderful time of just appreciation for everyone you love in your life, and I enjoy giving things to people. Though the day is advertised as a very romantic thing, it can also just be you celebrating the love you have for friends and family and that’s really nice to me. My favorite part of Valentine’s Day is seeing how happy and lovey everyone gets while receiving anything. The whole atmosphere is so happy feeling and it’s such a nice thing. The best gift I’ve received would have to be one time in ninth grade, my friend made fudge for everyone and gave us nice little cards she had made. It was very sweet. I spend Valentine’s Day with my friends, who I love the most. My mom tends to buy me a little chocolate box for the day every year.
